Downtown Kairouan is one of the underrated places in Tunisia. Walking through its alleys will take you back to a few centuries ago. The souk is live and kept in the old style. Walking in downtown, even under the hot sun, is a very pleasant experience.

Really pleasant area to walk around. Passed homes ,a cinema ,some non touristic shops ,small museum ,small street food cafes ,small mosques .Not a busy area. No hubbub . Clean. Indiana Jones moment.. The square where the market scene was filmed .

This is a fabulous place which goes back centuries and is a real reflection of the Arab Muslim history. Even though this is a huge expanse we found wandering to be a lot easier than other cities of Tunisia and it seemed to be less hurried and busy. You have to leave a lot of time as there are not on…
